Short history

75 YEARS OF HIGHER EDUCATION
75 years of higher education
University of Petrosani

University of Petroșani has a long and beautiful tradition, being the successor of the Mining Institute, which operated in Bucharest for over 80 years, and from the 1957 – 1958 academic year it operated in Petroșani. Only a few universities can boast such a lineage, attested by the decree of the ruler A.I. Cuza in 1864 establishing the “School of Bridges and Roads, Mines and Architecture”.

After 1990, by diversifying the university fields and specializations, the Mining Institute of Petroșani became the Technical University (1991) and then the University of Petroșani (1995). Based on this strong academic tradition and the prestige it enjoys at home and abroad, our University today provides the necessary conditions for its students to acquire a high qualification in many and varied fields, training in all forms of education.

The training of specialists is carried out in three faculties: Faculty of Mining, Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Faculty of Science. Since 1948, thousands of engineers, sub-engineers, economists, sociologists, mathematicians, teachers, etc. have graduated from the University of Petrosani. More than 4,500 students, master’s and doctoral students are trained in our University, with the support of more than 200 teaching staff. Doctoral training is provided by 19 scientific supervisors who are nationally and internationally recognised personalities. The solid training they have acquired has enabled them to adapt and integrate quickly to working conditions and methods in other countries (USA, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Israel, South American countries, Africa, Asia, etc.). Everywhere, graduates from the University of Petroșani are rated among the top professionals in their fields. The reorganisation of higher education, in line with the Bologna process, opens wide prospects for the graduates of the University of Petroșani to be recognised and to integrate into the European labour market. In 2009, the University of Petroșani was institutionally evaluated by the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education and obtained the rating “HIGH CONFIDENCE GRADE“.
