Brown coal exploitation in Oltenia affects and occupies large surfaces and contributes to the damage of the landscape, geological and hydrogeologycal structure, causing ecological and environmental disequilibrium due to the action on the environmental factors. This paper present the factors affected by pollutants, the objectives and directions of actions for the ecological and economical rehabilitation of the areas after the closure of the mines.

The sterile rocks dumps from the Jiu Valley are made of sterile materials from underground mining and from processing plants to coal. The impact generated by these dumps refers in particular to the fragmentation of the landscape, biodiversity loss and visual impact. This paper explores the naturalist engineering techniques that can be applied in order to dumps ecological rehabilitation, as well as benefits in the short term and long-term of this type of rehabilitation.

One emerging field in the context of geosciences is the medical geology. The medical geology encompasses within the broader range of geology and medicine the intricate relationships between living organisms, health and geological environment. The main objective of the medical geology is based on the study of the presence or absence of trace elements and their implications in human and ecosystem health. However, it is a difficult task to estimate the presence of trace elements in the living organisms and to quantify the effects related to their specific presence. It is a known fact that the same element, depending on its concentration and association with other elements, can induce quite different effects.

All energy sources will have to be used in ways that respects the atmosphere, human health and the environment as a whole. Many methods of producing energy and more effective technologies of using staples are already available or it could be developed by intensification of research. Coal is subjected to some compulsions that are placing it in a non - favorable position compared to petrol and gas, its direct competitors. The future of coal depends much on the developing of techniques that permit an easier utilization (such as gasification), a decrease in coal's impact on the environment, in terms of polluting emissions, by using clean combustion and CO2 retaining technologies.

After more then 30 years of development, specialized CAD software packages have now a wide spread in education, design, research and industry around the world. Surpac VISION® - a mine planning and design software was introduced since 2005 in the curriculum of students from Mining Engineering Faculty - University of Petrosani. The article presents the working principle applied in order to generate the digital terrain model of the morphology. In the final part are shown 3D pollution distribution models that illustrate the versatility of this software package.

The sistematical and continuous supervision of the environment and its components influenced by the natural and human factors in the Brad mining area is very necessary after the closure of the mines. All the environment factors must be taken into consideration: air, water, soil, flora and fauna. Also, attention must be paid to the location for the global, integrated monitoring stations. The work aims to offer solutions regarding the monitoring of the physical stability which includes the effects of the static and dynamic conditions and of the chemical stability, which includes measures for prevention, migration and control. This monitoring is necessary especially now, as the mining activity in the Brad region has ceased.

The desulphurization, and the burning gases' purification has become a major problem in the last quarter of the century for many users of burning installations with pollutant emissions. This paper is presents synthetically aspects concerning the necessity and priority for the implementation of the desulphurization installation at Paroseni Thermo power station. It's imperious that until 31.12.2010 at Paroseni Thermo power station the desulphurization installation is implemented, because nowadays at Paroseni Thermo power station the sulfur dioxide's emissions are ten times higher than the European standards.

This research paper work presents how to build a surface water quality monitoring sistem in the region of Jiu's Valley, Romania. The quality of surface water is affected by diferent activities present in the area, activities like mining, domestic and industrilal waste deposites, waste waters released in natural water courses which are not treated, waste water from car wash stations and other industrilal processes.
